Dr. Patrick Mahaney

I’m Dr. Patrick Mahaney and this is my Welsh Terrier Cardiff.

Although Cardiff is no longer with me he served as the inspiration for my holistic veterinary practice for years as he had a lifelong history of ailments, including Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA) and T-Cell Lymphoma.  Cardiff’s health challenges motivated me to become well-versed with Western (conventional) treatments like surgery, chemotherapy, and medications and Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) options like supplements, herbs, acupuncture, musculoskeletal therapy, Chinese medicine food energy therapy, and more.

I’ve always had a passion for animals and science, so veterinary medicine appealed to me when making decisions about college, graduate school, and career.  I started my career by getting a Bachelors in Animal Science from the University of Delaware (1995).

I then earned my Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris (VMD) degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine (1999) and completed an internship at Friendship Hospital for Animals in Washington, D.C (2000).

Having always pursued CAM modalities like massage, acupuncture, and chiropractic to treat my own intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) I felt a need to learn how to apply similar treatments for my patients, so I completed the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS) basic course (2006) and am now a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist (CVA).

Upon moving to Los Angeles in 2006 I recognized the need to share my holistic perspective on veterinary medicine with a world-wide audience and started writing and doing radio, television, and other media projects.   In this process I recognized that contributing to the resources of information accessible to pet owners was a crucial part of my veterinary practice, so I attained a Certified Veterinary Journalist (CVJ) certificate from the American Society of Veterinary Journalists (ASVJ).

Once I knew that Los Angeles was the city in which I wanted to spend the rest of my days practicing veterinary medicine I founded my own concierge-style, house call, integrative practice, California Pet Acupuncture and Wellness (CPAW), Inc.   I also provide a holistic complement to patients underling radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery treatment for cancer at the Veterinary Cancer Group (Culver City, CA).

I’m also a member of many professional advocacy groups, including the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), California Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA), Southern California Veterinary Medical Association (SCVMA), American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association (AHVMA), International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS), Lesbian Gay Veterinary Medical Association (LGVMA), and BlogPaws.
